Jeremiah Carlton: The Laziest Man in the World

Jeremiah Carlton is known for his legendary slothfulness, having spent an astonishing 70 years in bed after inheriting a fortune.

Born in 1701, Carlton's life took an unusual turn at the age of 19 when he came into a substantial inheritance. With his newfound wealth, he hired a legion of servants and retreated to his bed, a place he would seldom leave for the rest of his life.

Carlton's daily routine was minimal, dependent entirely on his servants who attended to his every need. He indulged in marathon naps, received the occasional sponge bath, and was spoon-fed his meals. Despite his extreme physical inactivity, Carlton's mind remained engaged through an endless stack of books that he devoured over the decades.

Jeremiah Carlton passed away in his sleep at the age of 89 on May 27, 1790. His life, while seemingly uneventful, became a subject of fascination and intrigue. The decision to spend seven decades in bed reflects the era’s social and cultural dynamics, where immense wealth could afford one the luxury of complete withdrawal from active life.
