In Carroll's provocative 1993 biography, Hunter: The Strange and Savage Life of Hunter S. Thompson, she detailed Thompson's daily routine, unsurprisingly involving cocaine, alcohol, and cigarettes. Thompson's well-documented fondness for these substances is no secret, yet Carroll's portrayal of his habits was intended humorously.

Interestingly, Carroll chose to structure the biography with alternating fictional and factual chapters—a peculiar approach for a biography. However, fans of Thompson's Gonzo style may appreciate Carroll's homage, as she satirizes his penchant for blurring reality and fiction in his own writings. Thompson's life and personality served as the basis for the iconic novel Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, a work that further solidified his reputation for blending fact and fantasy in a way that captivated audiences and critics alike.

9:00 starts snorting cocaine seriously
10:00 drops acid
11:00 Chartreuse, cocaine, grass
11:30 cocaine, etc, etc.
12:00 midnight, Hunter S. Thompson is ready to write
12:05-6:00 a.m. Chartreuse, cocaine, grass, Chivas, coffee, Heineken, clove cigarettes, grapefruit, Dunhills, orange juice, gin, continuous pornographic movies.
6:00 the hot tub-champagne, Dove Bars, fettuccine Alfredo
8:00 Halcyon
8:20 sleep
